Using XMPP server and clients for efficient instant messaging

Internet users are familiar with chat services like yahoo, MSN and Facebook chat etc. Open standards based instant messaging brings one important benefit. You are not locked to one service provider or one server. You can also run XMPP IM server in your company intranet or extranet. When running your own instant messaging server you can log chats and group chats, customer support sessions, meetings.

Your contacts can have their accounts in other XMPP servers and still you can communicate. Many XMPP servers accept messages from other XMPP servers. Some XMPP servers provide also connections to non XMPP based IM servers like MSN and Yahoo. mobile meeting

Setting up XMPP Account in Mobile Phones

For example in Nokia N900

• Go to Settings
• then VoIP and IM Accounts
• Click New
• Select Jabber
• for Address input yourusername@www.yourcompanydomain.com
• and your password
• Click Sign in
• you are done

If you want to join a meeting / group chat

You need to know what is the group chat room name in the server where you are logged in. Check that you are logged in as yourusername@www.yourcompanydomain.com. This you can do by clicking on the status area top of the screen and then click Availability. This will show status of all your IM accounts.

• check that you are logged in as yourusername@www.yourcompanydomain.com
• click conversations
• click menu Conversations on top right of the screen
• select Join chat room
• input the name of the room
• you are done and group chat window opens
